Weight management means controlling your body weight to a desirable level. A person can be overweight or underweight; either circumstance could lead to health problems. The body mass index (BMI) is often used to identify weight problems. You could also do a body fat test.
Being overweight exposes one to risk of stroke, hypertension, diabetes, abnormal blood fats, cancer, gallstones, sleep apnoea, osteoarthritis, and weak pelvic muscles. A person could be overweight due to a number of factors: heredity, age, diet, gender, lack of activity, pregnancy, certain kinds of medication and whether one is a smoker or not (some ex-smokers gain weight after quitting).
Being underweight could be caused by heredity, illness, psychological factors (for example eating disorders like bulimia and anorexia nervosa), and excessive intentional weight loss. Underweight people may find themselves prone to infection as a result of a compromised immune system, and suffer hair loss, low muscle mass, irregular hormone regulation, osteoporosis, and anaemia.
A weight management plan will greatly help one achieve one’s goals. For overweight people, this usually involves a good amount of physical activity and monitoring of diet. For those who are underweight, this usually means eating enough food to prevent them from losing what they’ve gained.
