Stress is a natural thing; our bodies adjust easily with its short-term effects. Chronic stress, however, can disrupt the body’s internal balance and cause it to be stuck in an over- and under-aroused state, causing increased susceptibility to illnesses as well as other physical and mental problems.

We get stressed when we interpret a particular situation or object as a threat. As the primal fight-or-flight response is triggered, the body makes changes to deal with the red alert. Through the action of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and the release of hormones such as adrenalin and cortisol, the body responds by increasing the heart rate and blood pressure (to pump oxygenated blood to the arms and legs), marshalling energy reserves, and gearing up the immune system to handle threats.

Over-activity of the ANS and increased cortisol secretion may bring about elevated levels of sugar in the blood (hyperglycaemia). If prolonged, it causes excessive production of insulin, and leads to type 2 diabetes. The cardiovascular system could be badly affected by way of hypertension, acceleration of arteriosclerosis and impairment of the immune system.

Stress management involves identifying the factors that cause stress, and entails techniques to effectively deal with its negative effects. This may include relaxation exercises, cognitive therapy, meditation, Ayurvedic medicine, assertiveness training, and managing one’s diet.
