Allergies are hypersensitive reactions in certain people to ordinarily harmless substances called allergens. These allergens may be inhaled, eaten, injected or touched, and come in various forms, among them house dust, pollens, mould spores, animal dander, insect bites and stings, latex rubber, and viruses.

Allergic reactions occur on subsequent contact with the allergen, once the body has become sensitised to it. Allergies can develop at any age and tends to run in families. Various parts of the body may be affected, and symptoms may appear from minutes to days after exposure.

Allergic diseases affect the upper respiratory system in the form of allergic rhinitis and asthma. The symptoms of allergic rhinitis may be sneezing, followed by a runny or clogged nose, coughing, and conjunctivitis. The signs of asthma may be breathlessness, wheezing, coughing, and tightness in the chest.

The skin may break out in hives and eczema too; and the effect upon the stomach and intestines may be diarrhoea, indigestion and vomiting.

If a person experiences worse symptoms than what’s listed above, they may be in anaphylactic shock (anaphylaxis). In this situation, there would be additional symptoms like swelling of tissues such as lips or joints, breathing difficulty, abdominal cramps, dizziness, convulsions, cold sweat, clammy skin and loss of consciousness. Failure to respond urgently to anaphylaxis could result in death.
